A16Z Files Comment Letter on Stablecoin AML/CFT Rules for Payment Stablecoin Issuers

A16Z submitted a formal comment letter to FinCEN and OFAC addressing AML/CFT and sanctions compliance program requirements for permitted payment stablecoin issuers.

Stablecoins: when the lobbyist writes the rulebook

No source material came through โ€” just the headline. So I won't pretend to know what a16z actually argued.

What I can say honestly: a venture firm with billions riding on stablecoin adoption submitting formal guidance to the regulators writing stablecoin rules is worth pausing on. That's not automatically sinister โ€” sometimes the people closest to a technology write the most useful comments. But it's worth asking whose interests get centred when the loudest voice in the room is also the most invested one.

The thing to watch when the actual letter surfaces is whether a16z pushed for compliance rules that entrench large, well-funded issuers โ€” or genuinely lowered the bar for everyone.
